Bryson DeChambeau is one of those athletes who seems able to hit an ever-increasing number of shots from different clubs with a variety of trajectories that seem almost impossible – but have been scientifically proven by computer algorithms that determine ball flight paths using multiple data points collected during every swing.
Bryson DeChambeau has been on a tear this season. He is currently ranked number one in the world, and he has already won two tournaments. On Sunday, Zalatoris channeled his inner Bryson DeChambeau and is now in position to notch his first PGA Tour win.
Will Zalatoris might have been mistaken for one of Bryson DeChambeau’s irons when he initially debuted on the PGA Tour. Zalatoris is still the same slender, lanky ball-striker he was two years ago, but he’s taken a leaf from DeChambeau’s book in an attempt to lengthen his game off the tee.
The 25-year-old is hitting it further off the tee than ever before, thanks to a few more pounds and a longer driver shaft, and the additional length puts him in contention for his first PGA Tour victory at the Farmers Insurance Open.

With an average of 307.4 yards per drive last season, Zalatoris was placed 23rd on the PGA Tour in driving distance. But he wasn’t satisfied.
So, throughout the offseason, the teenager hit the gym hard and gained 15 pounds. He also increased the length of his driver shaft by more than an inch in preparation for the American Express Championship last weekend, and he averaged 317.4 yards per drive throughout the week to finish second in the field.
“At home, I observed another 12 yards of carry without doing anything, without attempting to destroy it.” According to Golf.com, Zalatoris informed reporters after his sixth-place performance at PGA West that he was “just being normal.” “That’s going to be tremendous out here,” says the narrator. On certain courses, that additional 12 yards of carry will enable me to hit it over bunkers I was hitting into last year.”
In that regard, he is correct. On the PGA Tour these days, distance is king, and many players are following in DeChambeau’s footsteps by hitting it further off the tee. The most recent to do so is Zalatoris, and his goal is already paying off.

Willy Z wasn’t a short hitter by any means, but DeChambeau has pushed every player on the PGA Tour to raise their pace and distance in order to stay up with him. Zalatoris did just that in the summer, and he’s currently driving the ball further than he’s ever driven it.
Zalatoris is averaging 312.6 yards per drive through six starts this season, which ranks him 19th on the Tour. In his debut start with his new, longer driver shaft, he finished sixth in driving distance at The American Express.
This week at The Farmers Insurance Open, Zalatoris has been blasting it all around Torrey Pines, and he has a great chance to win his first PGA Tour championship.

Zalatoris starts the final round of The Farmers Insurance Open tied for the lead with Jason Day at 14-under par, thanks to his improved distance and flawless ball-striking throughout the week. At 13-under par, Jon Rahm, the last player to win at Torrey Pines, is only one stroke behind.
Zalatoris is now ranked sixth in the field in terms of driving distance after three rounds. Willy Z should be able to raise his first PGA Tour trophy on Saturday afternoon if he continues to drive the ball as effectively as he has, and if he can improve some of his putting issues.
