LeBron has been the MVP for five consecutive seasons and is considered one of the most dominant players in NBA history. There are a couple reasons why LeBron was able to win his fifth straight MVP despite playing on arguably the worst team as he enters this season, with many predicting that he will also become league champion again.

There’s Historical Precedent for LeBron James Winning His 5th MVP Despite Playing for a Losing Team. The last time it happened was in the year 1989 when Magic Johnson won his fifth MVP despite playing for the Lakers, who finished with a record of 31-51. There's Historical Precedent for LeBron James Winning His 5th MVP Despite Playing for a Losing Team

For the great LeBron James, age is only a number.

LeBron James is playing some of his greatest basketball of his career at the age of 37. On paper, he’d be a clear favorite to win the NBA MVP title. Despite this, James is being disregarded as a legitimate contender because to the 18-19 Los Angeles Lakers’ season-long troubles.

Even if the Lakers are unable to turn things around, there is a compelling argument to be made for the King to earn his sixth MVP award. He wouldn’t be the first player to win the award while being a member of a losing team.

LeBron James is putting up MVP-worthy stats.

The opening part of James’ fourth season in Los Angeles did not go according to plan. He missed 10 games due to ankle and abdominal ailments, as well as a one-game ban and a short spell in health and safety measures. However, since the beginning of December, the future Hall of Famer has been playing at a whole new level.

James averaged 30.7 points in 14 December games, shooting 55.5 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three. He concluded the month with a seven-game stretch of scoring 30 points or more, his longest since 2013. The most recent was a 139-106 victory against the Portland Trail Blazers, in which the new 37-year-old had 43 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and zero turnovers.

LeBron currently has season averages of 28.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks, which would put him second in the NBA behind Kevin Durant if he had enough games to qualify. Only assists are below his career averages among those five metrics.

On a losing team, LeBron would not be the only player to earn MVP.

The Lakers are holding the King back despite his blistering pace, which would otherwise put him in the MVP contention. Candidates including as Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Giannis Antetokounmpo all play on championship-caliber teams, but James’ Lakers are just 18-19.

While it may seem inconceivable, the MVP Award has been given to a player on a losing team previously.

Bob Pettit won the NBA MVP Award for the first time in 1956. Despite playing for the 33-39 St. Louis Hawks, Pettit won the award with ease, averaging 25.7 points and 16.2 rebounds per game. After averaging 27.7 points and 16.9 rebounds for the 40-42 Lakers, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar earned his fourth MVP Award 20 years later. Kareem is the only MVP to earn the award while playing for a club that did not make the playoffs.

Furthermore, on a playoff team that won fewer than 60% of its games, just three players were named MVP. Bob McAdoo was the first, with the 49-33 Buffalo Braves earning MVP in 1975. Moses Malone won it twice, representing the 47-35 Houston Rockets in 1979 and the 46-36 Rockets in 1982. Finally, after averaging a triple-double with the 47-35 Oklahoma City Thunder, LeBron’s new colleague Russell Westbrook earned his lone MVP award in 2017.

In order for LeBron James to make a genuine MVP case, the Los Angeles Lakers must eventually turn a corner.

It’s heartening to see that even if the Lakers aren’t a powerhouse, LeBron can still win his sixth MVP award. However, history tells that the King’s odds will rise dramatically if LA can dig itself out of its hole in the following four months.

Since 1956, 42 of the 66 MVP winners have been on the club with the best regular-season record. At this time, it’s reasonable to anticipate that LA will fall well short of that goal. Even so, LeBron may join the other 24 players who have won the award for reasons other than his team’s regular-season record.

The odds are stacked against James, given LA’s sub-.500 record and the quality of other contenders throughout the league. The King, on the other hand, is as good as ever in year 19. His accomplishment this season is all the more remarkable because of his age. If the Lakers were one of the best teams in the West, James would almost certainly win the MVP award.

Even if the Lakers struggle to get back on track and end just a game or two above.500, one can appreciate LeBron’s importance and recognize where this club would be without him. Though, in all probability, a LeBron-led sprint up the rankings will be required to earn him a meaningful berth in the race.
