TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — In Sunday’s 38-3 demolition of the Chicago Bears, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady became the first quarterback in NFL history to surpass 600 career touchdown passes.
On a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Evans with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter, it occurred. Outside linebacker Shaq Barrett caused a fumble by Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields, which was recovered by defensive lineman Vita Vea for the Buccaneers.
After the play, Brady was met with a massive embrace by coach Bruce Arians, while Evans gave the ball to a fan in the seats, unaware that it was a record until Arians informed him.
“I told you to go give that man two jerseys to get the ball back,” Arians laughed. “I was like, fetch two of Tom’s [or two of yours], but you have to return that ball to him. ‘Does he truly want that ball?’ he asked. ‘I’m betting he wants that ball,’ I responded.”
A Bucs official was able to recover the ball and hand it over to the fan.
“Wow, it was fantastic. Brady answered, “I have it in the bag over there.” “It was given away by Mike.” ‘Dude, I’m sorry, man,’ he says. ‘I’ll take care of it.’ ‘It’s OK,’ I replied. They’ll find a way to get it back, I’m sure.’ But, because I don’t save a lot of stuff, I figured that in that situation, it would be a nice one to keep.
“In exchange, he’ll receive something lovely. So we’ll purchase him a helmet, a handful of shirts, and other memorabilia. That was a pretty kind gesture on his part.”
In Sunday’s game, Brady delivered two additional touchdown passes, both to Evans for 2 and 8 yards in the second quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, he was replaced by Blaine Gabbert, who ended the game 20-of-36 for 211 yards and four touchdowns.
Not bad for a 44-year-old who famously forgot what down he was on against the Bears only a year before.
“He comes to practice every day looking like he’s 12,” Arians remarked. “The figures are mind-boggling, and they will almost certainly never be surpassed. That is true, but who knows when the next Tom Brady will appear? However, they are mind-boggling, and when you see him practice every day, you don’t notice his age.”
Brady also tossed at least four touchdown passes for the 37th time in his career, and the 97th game in which he threw at least three, matching Drew Brees for the most such games in NFL history.
Brady stated, “I simply think about all the men that are sharing it with me.” “That is the truth. There isn’t a single aspect of this sport that you can perform on your own. It’s the pinnacle of teamwork. Every week, every day at practice, it tests you physically, psychologically, and emotionally — this is not a sport you can simply turn in.
“To be successful, you have to give 100 percent every single day, and I’m really happy to have fantastic teammates and coaches, and to be able to do it for as long as I have is a truly incredible gift in my life. My family is wonderful. My little baby daughter, who is the world’s largest cheerleader, and her two brothers, who are also terrific cheerleaders, as well as my mother, who was out there today rooting… it’s nice to have the family here, and winning a football game feels amazing.”
While the achievement was significant and will undoubtedly add to Brady’s long list of achievements, the highlight of the day was discovering a little child in the stands holding a placard that said, “Tom Brady helped me fight brain cancer.” Brady shook the boy’s hand and put his hat on his head. The little youngster started to weep, his face buried in his fists.
Brady said, “That was extremely lovely.” “Man, you’re obviously a difficult kid. It puts a lot of what we’re doing on the field into perspective. In the end, it’s nothing in comparison to what individuals go through. We’re all trying to make a difference in our own unique ways.”
The Buccaneers have a 6-1 record, which is the finest start in team history.
