The Eagles have been in the news a lot lately, and the rumors about them being able to make some big moves has fueled speculation of what they might do. As he approaches the last year of his rookie contract with the Seattle Seahawks, all eyes are on DK Metcalf. Metcalf’s future with the Seahawks is complicated by the growing cost of wide receivers around the NFL for two reasons. The apparent issue is that Metcalf’s expected new contract will get more costly when Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill sign new contracts that would reshape the receiver market, with average yearly salaries ranging from $28 to $30 million.
The second reason is that if the Seahawks want to move Metcalf, they may be able to obtain a king’s ransom. The Seahawks would not only be relieved of Metcalf’s huge contract extension, but they would also get a package of draft selections to aid in their rebuilding efforts.
According to Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, the Eagles are a club to keep an eye on if the Seahawks pursue Metcalf in a trade. According to Ballentine’s trade proposal, the Seahawks would get the Nos. 15 and 83 selections in the 2018 draft in exchange for Metcalf. The Eagles would also give the Seahawks a third-round pick in 2023 as part of the deal. If Seattle pulls the trigger on this blockbuster move, they’ll end up with four choices in the top 41.
Because Metcalf is the last remaining star on the roster, the Seahawks making the trade would be fraught with criticism. Metcalf’s departure would be difficult to sell to a disgruntled fan base after the team released Bobby Wagner and traded Russell Wilson.

The Seahawks are speaking about Metcalf’s future in the same way they did about Wilson’s.
Throughout the summer, the Seahawks have gushed about Metcalf and expressed their desire to sign him to a contract extension. At the NFL owners meetings, Seahawks general manager John Schneider said that the team’s “goal” is to re-sign Metcalf. The Seahawks “plan” for Metcalf to have a long-term career in Seattle, according to head coach Pete Carroll.
If this seems familiar, it’s because the Seahawks used similar language concerning Wilson’s future during the NFL Combine. The Seahawks and the Broncos agreed to a blockbuster deal a few days later, moving the franchise quarterback to Denver.

After dismissing Wagner and dealing Wilson, the Seahawks are down to their bare bones. The Seahawks acquired Tyler Lockett to a long-term contract last summer, but Metcalf is the team’s lone box office attraction. The goal of using draft selections and cap space is to discover stars like Metcalf.
The bundle of choices is appealing, but no one can guarantee that any of them will develop into a star like Metcalf. In terms of cost reductions, the Seahawks have seldom made major moves in free agency, preferring to hunt for deals outside of re-signing their own players. When it came to Metcalf’s future and the escalating cost of wideouts this offseason, Schneider admits to having a “holy s***” moment.
Schneider told Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, “I was chatting to my guys about it the other night and we were like, ‘Holy s***, dude.” “Isn’t it what it is now?” This is how the market works. We’ll get to it as soon as we can. There’s some “Whoa,” and then you have to figure out, “OK, where’s the cap going?” What will it seem to be? ‘How do you go about putting up a team?’ That’s something we do on a daily basis.”
Dugar sees parallels between Metcalf and the team’s choice to sell Frank Clark to the Chiefs in 2019 rather than sign him to a long-term contract. In exchange for Metcalf, the Seahawks are expected to get two top-50 draft picks, according to the Seahawks source.
On April 1, Dugar said, “Clark received a reasonable amount of trade compensation.” “Metcalf would bring in a similar haul, with a couple of top-50 choices and more. Seattle would be able to refill the position by receiving a slew of draft selections. However, as the Seahawks have found in recent years, there is no assurance that this will be a success.”
