The Port of Galveston is a relatively small facility that serves as the primary transportation hub for the Gulf Coast. Its deep water port sits on the coast of Galveston Bay and is the nation’s fifth busiest cruise terminal. By the end of 2018, the port’s annual passenger throughput is expected to rise to 2.72 million, up from 2.63 million in 2017.

The Port of Galveston is currently under construction to make way for Royal Caribbean’s new terminal. The facility will be based off of the Royal Caribbean’s three-ship terminal at Port Canaveral, and will allow for the cruise company to begin sailing its new fleet of vessels to the Gulf Coast. While the cruise line is waiting on permits to begin construction on the port, it has already begun to install some of the terminal’s infrastructure.

The terminal project is nearing completion and will soon serve as the gateway into Galveston for Royal Caribbean Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line. The terminal will open in phases, with construction well underway on the cruise ship docks and boat wash. The terminal itself will be built on top of the Terminal One building, which opened in 2003.

It took a while, but construction has finally begun on Royal Caribbean’s new port in Galveston, Texas. Construction of the new terminal has been delayed for more than a year, but this week workers put the first spade in the ground at the site of Galveston’s newest cruise terminal.

The new cruise terminal will be an important step in enabling the port to serve larger cruise ships and compete with Florida’s major cruise ports, including Port Canaveral, Port of Miami and Port Everglades.

The new terminal will be suitable for Oasis class ships

The construction of the new terminal was delayed by more than a year, although it should have been built. Although construction has already begun, it will be many months before anything resembling a building is visible.

The new terminal, which will cost the Port of Galveston and Royal Caribbean $110 million to build, is to be built on the Pier 10 site and will require the subdivision of numerous lots. Before construction of the terminal can begin, workmen must demolish acres of concrete on the pier. The work to remove the old concrete is a major milestone for a terminal that once seemed to fall victim to the coronavirus pandemic.

Albert Shannon, chairman of the Galveston Marina Board of Directors:

It has finally begun. After all the preparations, all the negotiations, the pandemic and everything else, it has finally begun.

In the coming weeks the residents will experience a lot of inconvenience due to the towing away of construction waste by trucks. Finally, trucks will bring tons of soil to the site to lay the foundation for the 150,000 square foot building. The entire site will be over 10 acres in size.

The final design of the new terminal will include a large blue rotunda with a covered passenger check-in area. A new paid parking garage will also be built next to the terminal.
