Robert Williams' Injury a Crushing Blow to Title Hopes

The Boston Celtics got devastating news on the first day of their reign as the Eastern Conference’s top seed, thereby ending their chances of winning an NBA title this season.

This season, Celtics big Robert Williams III has quickly established himself as one of the finest defensive players in the league. As a rim-roller and lob threat, he provided the C’s with a defensive anchor who also contributed numerous aspects to the team’s offense. Williams also improved significantly as a passer capable of playing on the perimeter.

In 2022, Boston established themselves as a genuine competitor. However, Williams will be out permanently, putting the Celtics’ championship dreams in jeopardy.

Robert Williams is said to have torn his meniscus.

When Williams departed Sunday’s victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a knee injury, Celtics fans were understandably anxious. The team first diagnosed it as a sprain, but Williams would be subjected to more imaging.

Further testing seems to have confirmed Boston’s worst concerns.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Williams is “feared” to have a meniscus tear in his left knee. Charania stated that the Defensive Player of the Year candidate could face an “indefinite” absence, likely threatening his playing status come playoff time.

This news could not have come at a more inconvenient moment for a Celtics club that has appeared almost untouchable this season.

Williams, who has flourished even in Boston’s worst times this season, was essential in establishing the team’s defense and providing some inside scoring for the Celtics. The team of head coach Ime Udoka is in serious difficulties without him on the floor.

Since the start of the new year, the Celtics have been by far the greatest defensive team in the NBA. Robert Williams has established himself as one of the best rim protectors and weak-side defenders in the NBA.

This season, Williams was second in the NBA in both blocks per game (2.2) and total blocks (134), behind only Memphis Grizzlies center Jarvis Jackson Jr. He often enters from the weak side to slice slashers and swat away bucket attempts. His incredible athleticism helps him to recover from apparently impossible situations and create plays.

However, it’s not only about making defensive plays. On Williams, players just do not score. Williams, according to ESPN’s Kirk Goldsberry, topped all players in defensive field goal % and was second in field goal percentage near the rim before Sunday’s game.

The influence of Timelord enables Boston’s guards and wings to take more chances and press up against perimeter ballhandlers. Because they know Williams can typically compensate for errors, they may sell out for thefts and deflections more often.

Williams’ defensive impact is obvious, but he also unlocks things on the attacking end. According to NBA.com, with him as the pick-and-roll roll’s man, Boston scored 1.33 points per possession. Because of his ability to roll hard and grab lobs near the basket, he pushes opposing bigs to make difficult choices. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, both of whom can go to the bucket or create even more separation in screen-and-roll action, benefit from their indecisiveness.

Williams is also capable with the ball in his hands. By spotting back-cuts, he can tally assists and has the patience to wait for opportunities to develop. This additional playmaking relieves some of the strain on Tatum, Brown, and a resurgent Marcus Smart.

But, with Williams out of uniform for the foreseeable future, the Celtics’ roster has taken on a new look, and it’s not a nice one.

There’s a chance Boston won’t be able to compensate.

The Celtics are in a bit of a predicament with Robert Williams out due to injury.

Grant Williams has shown to be a valuable floor spacer and has improved his ability to make plays off the bounce. He’s also been more consistent on defense, switching onto guards in pick-and-roll situations. Al Horford, a veteran big man, is quietly enjoying a good season. Daniel Theis knows how to make the most of his time and how to keep the paint safe.

Still, losing Williams deprives the Celtics of much-needed frontcourt depth as well as an inside cog who was expected to play a key role in the postseason.

The top Eastern Conference teams usually prosper because of their ability to dominate in the paint. Last season, the Milwaukee Bucks took advantage of their size to win a championship. The 76ers rely on Joel Embiid to dominate on the inside, while James Harden tries to go into the lane and get to the free-throw line.

Other teams may feel more secure about dominating the lane and having better views around the cup now that Timelord is gone. In his absence, opponents have a better chance of clearing the boards and gaining more chances on the offensive glass.

Horford and Theis aren’t nearly as valuable offensively as screeners. Both can make the rare outside jumper, but neither is particularly adept at lob threats or hard rolls. This might affect spacing and even reduce the floor, which could hurt Tatum and Brown’s shot-creation abilities.

In Williams’ absence, the Celtics will have to change their approach on both sides of the court. For a club that had gotten into an unflappable rhythm, it’s the worst possible news.

Unless Williams is able to return for the playoffs, Boston may not have enough to win a title. On both ends, Timelord is just too essential for the Celtics to compensate for.
