The “women’s final four 2022” is a tournament that has been around for a while. It will be the last women’s final four to take place before it changes to the men’s final four.
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — On Saturday night, the Kansas Jayhawks got the 2022 Final Four off to a hot start, jumping out to a 10-0 lead and holding the Villanova Wildcats at bay the rest of the way in an 81-65 victory at the Caesars Superdome. With the win, KU advances to the NCAA championship game for the first time since 2012, with a chance to lift the trophy for the first time since beating Memphis in the 2008 final game.
The game served as a warm-up for Saturday’s highly anticipated second matchup between the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina Tar Heels, which will be the first NCAA tournament meeting between the Tobacco Road rivals and could be the final act for Duke head coach and Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski on what will be his final weekend in college basketball.
Myron Medcalf, Jeff Borzello, John Gasaway, and Joe Lunardi of ESPN examined what went well for Kansas on Saturday, what went wrong for Villanova, and what effect a Kansas win against an ACC school in the championship game would have on Monday night.
What was the deciding factor in Kansas’ victory against Villanova?
The Jayhawks’ star and their season-long (career-long?) X factor are Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack.
Agbaji recovered from a momentary dip in the second half of the Elite Eight victory against Miami, and he took that energy into Saturday night’s game. He came out firing, hitting two threes in the first three minutes and going 4-for-4 from long range in the first eight minutes. Collin Gillespie’s adjustment to him slowed Agbaji down a little at the end of the first half, but two more backbreaking 3s in the second half kept Villanova at bay.
Against Villanova, McCormack was always going to be crucial. Because the Wildcats lacked his size, it was a question of whether he could keep out of foul trouble, remain on the court, and be productive. Kansas didn’t waste any time in announcing its intentions. Early and frequently, the Jayhawks forced the ball into the post for McCormack, who scored two baskets in the first two minutes and was receiving touches on practically every play. In the first 11 minutes, he scored 13 points. When Villanova began targeting McCormack with lesser players on the defensive end, the big man countered by going to work on the other end. Agbaji and McCormack scored a total of 46 points. Borzello’s words

The Jayhawks, predictably, will do better against North Carolina than Duke. Mark Williams’ defensive domination around the rim for the Blue Devils contributes to this. He’s capable of silencing McCormack on his own down low, which would be an issue for Kansas considering how important McCormack has been in the Jayhawks’ recent victories. Duke is also susceptible to teams who can lure Williams away from the hoop and force the Blue Devils to defend in space for prolonged periods of time.
The Jayhawks have seasoned big guys down low in McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot to throw at North Carolina’s Armando Bacot in terms of personnel. They have Jalen Wilson, who is large and flexible enough to deal with Brady Manek on North Carolina’s pick-and-pop offense. However, I believe the Tar Heels’ defensive zeal on the wings with Caleb Love and Leaky Black might present problems for Agbaji and Christian Braun. All of this isn’t to argue that Kansas isn’t capable of defeating Duke. It’s simply that it may be a more difficult matchup than North Carolina. Borzello’s words
What will this Villanova team’s legacy be?
The Wildcats continue to show that basketball success can be had without a big-time football program. The only really top programs in that area are Villanova and Gonzaga.
Regardless of the outcome of the Final Four, Jay Wright and the Wildcats will leave a lasting legacy. Wright won the Big East tournament and the NCAA South Regional in what was perhaps his most restricted club of his four that made it to the national semifinals.
The Cats of 2021-22 should and will be remembered as one of the most popular teams in program history. Gillespie will join Scottie Reynolds, Ryan Archidiacano, and Jalen Brunson as the coach’s own Mount Rushmore when they create a monument for him eventually. Lunardi’s words
What kind of historical ramifications might a Kansas victory on Monday night have?
Bill Self has accomplished everything possible at Kansas, but he recognizes that a single national championship in 2008 doesn’t compare to 15 Big 12 crowns and nine No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. In New Orleans, tearing down the nets forever alters the story.
Coaches that have won several NCAA titles are few and far between. And a fourth trophy for Kansas would put them behind just five other programs on the all-time record, one of whom — North Carolina (6) or Duke (5) — would be their opponent on Monday.
The Jayhawks are said to be on their way. When COVID ruined their tournament hopes two years ago, they were the top team in the nation, and they may very well be the best team left in 2022. Lunardi’s words
