What was the deciding factor in Kansas’ victory against Villanova?
The Jayhawks’ star and their season-long (career-long?) X factor are Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack.
Agbaji recovered from a momentary dip in the second half of the Elite Eight victory against Miami, and he took that energy into Saturday night’s game. He came out firing, hitting two threes in the first three minutes and going 4-for-4 from long range in the first eight minutes. Collin Gillespie’s adjustment to him slowed Agbaji down a little at the end of the first half, but two more backbreaking 3s in the second half kept Villanova at bay.

Against Villanova, McCormack was always going to be crucial. Because the Wildcats lacked his size, it was a question of whether he could keep out of foul trouble, remain on the court, and be productive. Kansas didn’t waste any time in announcing its intentions. The Jayhawks, predictably, will do better against North Carolina than Duke. Mark Williams’ defensive domination around the rim for the Blue Devils contributes to this. He’s capable of silencing McCormack on his own down low, which would be an issue for Kansas considering how important McCormack has been in the Jayhawks’ recent victories. Duke is also susceptible to teams who can lure Williams away from the hoop and force the Blue Devils to defend in space for prolonged periods of time.
The Jayhawks have seasoned big guys down low in McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot to throw at North Carolina’s Armando Bacot in terms of personnel. They have Jalen Wilson, who is large and flexible enough to deal with Brady Manek on North Carolina’s pick-and-pop offense. However, I believe the Tar Heels’ defensive zeal on the wings with Caleb Love and Leaky Black might present problems for Agbaji and Christian Braun. What will this Villanova team’s legacy be?
The Wildcats continue to show that basketball success can be had without a big-time football program. The only really top programs in that area are Villanova and Gonzaga.
Regardless of the outcome of the Final Four, Jay Wright and the Wildcats will leave a lasting legacy. Wright won the Big East tournament and the NCAA South Regional in what was perhaps his most restricted club of his four that made it to the national semifinals.

What kind of historical ramifications might a Kansas victory on Monday night have?
Bill Self has accomplished everything possible at Kansas, but he recognizes that a single national championship in 2008 doesn’t compare to 15 Big 12 crowns and nine No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament. In New Orleans, tearing down the nets forever alters the story.
