Tiger Woods is set to make his Masters debut after agreeing a deal with Augusta National, who backed the former world No. 1 for their first event since reopening following renovations earlier this year.

On Monday, Augusta National had a “atmosphere like you’ve never seen before” as thousands of fans flocked to witness Tiger Woods, the five-time Masters winner who is attempting to establish his health to play this week.

The 46-year-old stunned many when he stated last week that he plans to participate in the first men’s major of 2022, barely 14 months after sustaining life-threatening injuries in a car accident while speeding.

In the company of close friends Justin Thomas and 1992 Masters winner Fred Couples, he played 18 holes on Tuesday, a handful on Sunday, and nine more on Monday.

Couples said Woods looked “phenomenal” and “really amazing” and added, “I’m confident he’ll tee it up on Thursday.”

“If he’s in agony, he’ll never tell you.” He was destroying it. He didn’t miss many shots and drove the car well. He’s just incredible.

“It’s simply a matter of walking now. He’ll be in contention if he can stroll around here for 72 holes.”

Woods is due to talk to the media at 16:00 BST on Tuesday. His last professional competition was the rescheduled Masters in November 2020, when he was the reigning champion.

He has yet to clarify whether or not he would participate, but with storms expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, he may not be able to spend much more time on the course.

On Monday, as he emerged from the clubhouse, he was welcomed by applause that were loud enough to distract Bryson DeChambeau.

“We could hear the tremendous clamor as he walked out of the clubhouse up to the first tee from the driving range,” said the 2020 US Open champion. “To hear that was quite wonderful.”

Nick Faldo, England’s three-time winner, tweeted: “Tiger just stepped out of the clubhouse to never-before-seen sights and atmosphere. Customers clapping and crowding around the putting green. It’s just Monday at the Masters, after all.”

Woods said in February that the mountainous terrain at Augusta National would be too soon in his rehabilitation for him.

He spent many months in the hospital last year after incurring very critical injuries in a single vehicle automobile accident near Los Angeles, which he caused by exceeding the 45mph speed limit. Woods has said that he may have died in the collision, with the prospect of having to amputate a limb being another concern at the moment.

Regardless of his off-course misdeeds, Woods has remained the most popular golfer on the planet.

Despite only playing once last year, in an exhibition tournament with his son Charlie in December, the 15-time major champion was awarded the PGA Tour’s ‘Player Impact Program,’ with a tweet in November showing him striking balls for the first time since his accident seen by millions.

So it’s no surprise that Augusta National had people lined every fairway and standing 10-deep around the greens on Monday.

And his colleagues are ecstatic to see him at Augusta National.

“It’s great because there’s a chance he’ll play this week,” Australia’s 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott said.

“I really hope he succeeds. It would be amazing regardless of the circumstances.”

If Woods participates, Scott says he’ll be aiming to equal Jack Nicklaus’ six Masters championships, which would put him only two behind his fellow American’s 18 major trophies.

“I’ve known for a long time not to distrust the man,” Scott stated. “You can’t dispute his golf if he can move about, which seems to be the issue.”

Cameron Davis, who won the Players Championship last month, played five holes alongside Woods on Sunday.

“He’s hitting it beautifully,” Smith said, adding that Woods was “still a bit sluggish coming up a couple of hills on 17 and 18.” He’s hitting it far enough to play the holes as they should be played.

“I don’t understand why he wouldn’t be able to put rounds together out here,” says the narrator.
