Coach K’s career has come to an end. The Duke Blue Devils’ season came to an end in the Final Four of the 2022 NCAA tournament, when they were defeated by the North Carolina Tar Heels. With that, Mike Krzyzewski’s illustrious career, which he announced in June will finish after the season, comes to a conclusion.
Krzyzewski was a mainstay in collegiate basketball, winning over 1,000 games and leading the Blue Devils to five national titles and 12 Final Four appearances. Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Jay Williams, and JJ Redick were among the players and coaches he coached. He was a member of five gold-medal-winning teams with Team USA basketball as an assistant and head coach (1984, 1992, 2008, 2012, 2016).
From 1966 to 1969, Krzyzewski was a member of the Army Black Knights under Bobby Knight as a West Point student. Krzyzewski was dismissed from the Army in 1974 after serving on active service. For the 1974-75 season, he worked as an assistant for Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers.

It’s been 49 years since Coach K hasn’t coached on the sidelines.
Despite the absence of Krzyzewski, the 1973-74 season featured several parallels to today’s sport:
— The NCAA tournament was dominated by an ACC team: NC State won it all, beating Marquette in the national championship game.
— Kansas took first place in their league.
— In Bill Walton’s last season as UCLA coach, the Bruins reached the Final Four despite having their record 88-game winning streak snapped earlier in the season.

All five players were born in 1973, the same year that Krzyzewski took over as head coach. The 1992 national championship game was the culmination of the Duke-Michigan rivalry. The Blue Devils beat the Wolverines in the national championship game in 1991-92 after winning a regular-season encounter in Ann Arbor.
It was a one-sided rivalry: Duke never lost to the Wolverines throughout the Fab Five era.
