If you’ve ever tried to watch a movie with subtitles on KODI, you’ve probably discovered that they are not exactly ideal. Even if you have a good subtitle quality setting, the characters have a tendency to be too dark, or the text is too small. Or you might have to wait for the subtitles to load for a long time, which can be very frustrating.

The law requires that as of January 1st, 2022, all movie and television channels must broadcast in the format most widely used by citizens of the US, which is dubbed “H.264” or MPEG-4. However, on most devices and operating systems, KODI will still be limited to playing only the older “H.262” or MPEG-2 format.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to get subtitles on Kodi 18, Kodi 19, or an older version of Kodi by using the OpenSubtitles.org and Subscene.com subtitle services. The methods I have described here work for Kodi on FireStick, Windows PC, Mac, Nvidia Shield, Android, and all other devices that support Kodi.

Kodi subtitles are sometimes indispensable, especially when the sound quality is not good or when I need to turn the sound down so as not to disturb the people around me. At night, I turn the volume down to a barely audible level and can’t live without subtitles. When I watch videos in a foreign language, of course I need subtitles.

These are my reasons for adding subtitles to Kodi, and since you’re reading this guide, I assume you have your own. That’s why I put together this guide to show you how to get subtitles on Kodi. Read on!

Important! !! Some addons require subtitles to be enabled in the addon settings to work. If your subtitles don’t work, make sure you turn them on in the addon. I have described these steps later in this guide.

How to get subtitles for Kodi with OpenSubtitles

Opensubtitles is probably the best subtitle service for Kodi. This service offers subtitles in several languages and for almost all movies and TV shows released so far.

If you’re looking for subtitles for Kodi, OpenSubtitles will always be my first recommendation. And if you explore subtitles on Kodi, you’ll see for yourself that OpenSubtitles has the best.

Without further ado, let’s see how to get subtitles on Kodi from OpenSubtitles.org.

Attention KODI users: please read before continuing

Kodi addons / modules offer unlimited streaming content, but can also get you in legal trouble if you get caught watching movies / TV shows / sports for free. Kodi users are strongly advised to always connect a VPN when streaming online. A good Kodi VPN can hide your identity, bypass government surveillance, block content, and ISP throttling (which also contributes to buffer-free streaming).

I use ExpressVPN, which is the fastest and most secure VPN. It is very easy to install on any device, including the Amazon FireStick. Get 3 months free and save 49% on annual plans. There is also a 30 day money back guarantee. If you are not satisfied, you can always ask for a refund.

Step one: The first thing you need to do is register at OpenSubtitles.org. Unfortunately subtitles for Kodi by OpenSubtitles cannot be used without registration. Go to https://www.opensubtitles.org and click on the Register link at the top of the page.

Follow the on-screen instructions to register and create a username and password.

Step two: Now start Kodi and select Add-ons from the left part of the home screen.

Step three: Open the Install Package option at the top left of the screen. It looks like an open box.

Step four: In the next screen, click Install from memory.

Step 5: Click on the Kodi add-on repository when you see the list of repositories. This is the official Kodi repository that comes pre-installed with Kodi.

Note that if you do not have at least one repository installed other than the Kodi add-on repository, the above list of repositories will not be displayed. After you clicked the Install from repository button in step 4, you will be taken directly to the screen I added in step 6.

Step six: Click Subtitles when this window appears.

Seventh step: Now select OpenSubtitles.org from the list.

Step 8: Click the Install button you see in the lower right corner of the next screen.

Step 9: Now wait for the Opensubtitles.org add-on installation notification (top right; see image below).

Step 10: Click OpenSubtitles.org again, and then click Configure in the next window.

Step 11: You will now see the following dialog box. Click Username and enter the username you created in step 1 for Kodi Subtitles on OpenSubtitles.org.

Click Password and enter the password for your OpenSubtitles account. Then click on OK.

Step 12: Go back to the Kodi home screen and press Settings (cog icon).

Step 13: Open player.

Step 14: Make sure Standard (or anything other than Basic) is selected in the lower left corner where you see the gear icon. Now select the Language option in the left pane of the next window.

Step 15: In the Download Services section on the right, click on Subtitle Download Languages to select the desired subtitle language for Kodi. For most of us, the default language will be English.

Step 16: Then click on Standard TV Show Service to set up Kodi subtitles for TV shows.

Step 17: Select OpenSubtitles.org and click on it. As you can see, I’ve already downloaded OpenSubtitles.org and so it appears in the list.

Step 18: Now click on Default movie service and repeat step 17.

Step 19: Here’s what the screen looks like after installing and configuring Opensubtitles in Kodi.

That’s basically all you need to do to add subtitles to Kodi. Now turn on the TV show or movie of your choice and click on the subtitle icon in the lower right corner. OpenSubtitles searches for subtitles for the title currently playing.

Before you start streaming video with Kodi addons or modules, I want to warn you that everything you stream on Kodi is visible to your ISP and the government. This means that streaming copyrighted content (free movies, TV shows, live broadcasts and sports) can lead to legal problems.

Fortunately, there is a reliable way to hide all your streaming activities from your ISP and the government. All you need is a good VPN for Kodi. A VPN masks your original IP address and helps you bypass surveillance, ISPs and geographical restrictions on content.

Personally, I use and recommend ExpressVPN, the fastest and most secure VPN. It is compatible with all types of applications and streaming devices.

OPINION: We do not encourage copyright infringement. But what if you accidentally upload content from an illegal source? It is not always easy to distinguish between a legal and an illegal source.

So before you start streaming on Kodi, read here how to get VPN protection in 3 easy steps.

Step one: Purchase your ExpressVPN subscription HERE. It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means you can use it for free for the first 30 days. If you are not satisfied with the service (which is unlikely), you can ask for a full refund.

Step two: Click HERE to download and install the ExpressVPN application on your streaming device. If you are using a FireStick, I have included the exact steps below, starting with step 4.

Step three: Click on the power icon to connect to the VPN server. That’s it. Now your connection is secure with the fastest and best VPN for Kodi.

The steps to install Kodi VPN on Fire TV devices are described below. If you have other broadcast devices, follow steps 1 to 3 above.

Step four: Sign up for ExpressVPN HERE (if you are not already a subscriber).

Step 5: Go to the Fire TV Stick home screen. Click the Search button and then the Search option (see figure below).

Step six: Type expressvpn into the search bar and select when it appears.

Seventh step: Click on the Download button.

Step 8: Open the ExpressVPN application and log in using the username and password you created when you purchased your ExpressVPN subscription.

Step 9: Click on the power icon to connect to the VPN server. That’s it. Now your FireStick is protected with the fastest VPN.

Aresubtitles not working? Enable subtitles in addon settings

Some addons require subtitles to be enabled for them to work. This can be done in the addon settings. In this example, I’m using the Exodus Redux addon. For other addons, however, the actions are almost identical.

Here are the steps:

1. On the Kodi home screen, go to Add-ons > Video Add-ons and open the Exodus Redux addon.

2. On the Exodus Redux home screen, scroll down and press Tools.

3. Click SETTINGS in the next window: Subtitles from

4. Make sure the Subtitles option is always selected in the menu on the left.

Activate the option Including subtitles on the right hand side.

5. Click OK to save your changes.

To get subtitles on Kodi without registering

I have no doubt that Opensubtitles is the best subtitling service for Kodi. But it is also true that the installation on Kodi takes a bit of effort. If you want to install subtitles on Kodi relatively quickly, I have another option for you – Kodi’s Subscene subtitle service.

Subscene may not offer as many subtitles for Kodi as OpenSubtitles, but overall it works pretty well. And you can configure it directly from Kodi without having to create an account.

I’ll show you how to add subtitles to Kodi in a few quick and easy steps using Subscene.com.

Step one: Go back to the Kodi home screen and click Settings in the top right corner (just below the Kodi logo).

Now select Player from the list of options.

Step two: Now select the Language option on the left and under Download Services on the right, click on Languages for which to download subtitles to change/select the Kodi subtitle language you want. The standard language is English. If you want specifically English, do not touch this option.

Step three: Now click on Standard TV Service.

Step four: Click Get more and download the Subscene.com subtitle service for Kodi.

Step 5: Now click on Subscene.com to make it the default subtitle service for Kodi.

Step six: Now select the default movie service and repeat step 5.

Now that you have successfully set up Subscene.com, it will find the available subtitles for Kodi for the specific title you are playing.

Message: Selecting Subscene.com as the default subtitles service for Kodi doesn’t mean you can no longer use Opensubtitles. When searching for subtitles while playing a movie, you can always choose Opensubtitles or any other subtitle service you have installed.

Supplement

The experience of using Kodi sometimes becomes more pleasant with subtitles. OpenSubtitles and Subscene are two of the best subtitles for Kodi. Subscene is a faster way to get subtitles on Kodi. However, in some cases the subtitles in Subscene may not be synchronized with the video. This seems like a setback, but it doesn’t have to be. At any time during video playback, you can move the subtitles by moving them forward or backward to synchronize them. Offsets usually work. But if not, you can always use OpenSubtitles. I noticed almost no synchronization problems.

So here is how we set subtitles for Kodi, using two of the best subtitle services. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to ask them in the comment box below.
