If you have a computer that supports Wi-Fi, the group of frequencies known as the 5GHz band is probably the most crowded, with many other Wi-Fi devices on the same channel. The 3.5GHz band is usually quiet, but you can’t use it to connect to the internet without interference from outside signals.

Windows 10 has a new wireless networking mode called “5Ghz to 2.4Ghz” or vice versa. This is a great new feature, and unfortunately, it only works slightly better than the old 2.4GHz to 5GHz transition. It’s a little more reliable, but more importantly, the mode is only backward compatible with a few devices. Here’s how to make it work.

I’ve got a confession to make…I’m the guy who changed your 5GHz WiFi network to 2.4GHz in Windows 10…

Depending on what you want to achieve, you can switch the WiFi radio frequency between 5GHz and 2.4GHz on some 5GHz wireless Windows 10 adapters, or you can also change the WiFi frequency directly on your wireless router, which will affect all devices connected to it.

This guide shows you how to change the radio frequency (range) of your wireless adapter (only adapters that support radio frequency switching) from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz or vice versa in Windows 10, and also how to force the WiFi radio frequency of your wireless router.

Switch from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz or vice versa in Windows 10 (wireless adapter)

The ability to force a change in the preferred frequency range of a radio adapter depends on the capabilities of the adapter. Not all wireless adapters can switch between the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz band.

To switch between the preferred bands – 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz – of the WLAN adapter in Windows 10, do the following

  1. In the Windows 10 search bar, search for Device Manager and open it.
  2. In the Device Manager window, click Network Adapters to expand it. You will get a list of all network adapters detected on your computer.
  3. Right-click the wireless adapter whose radio frequency you want to change and select Properties.

  1. Click on the Advanced tab.
  2. Under Properties, locate the Preferred Area or Area option. Pick it.
  3. Click on the drop-down menu under Value and select the desired range: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

Change of power from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz

If you want to force the wireless adapter to use only 5GHz if there is no preferred band option in the wireless adapter properties, look for another option called VHT 2.4G.

If the VHT 2.4G option is available, you can change the value to Disable to completely disable 2.4G and let your WLAN adapter use only 5G.

No possibility to select Preferred Band or VHT 2.4G

If you do not see any of these options, your adapter probably only supports 2.4 GHz. However, in some cases you may not be able to change the preferred band even though the adapter supports both the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands.

In that case, your only option is to manually connect to a 2.4G or 5G WLAN (WLANs that support both bands usually have both 2.4G and 5G networks you can connect to).

Or change the preferred frequency of your wireless router’s WiFi radio, which will affect all devices connected to it.

Change the WiFi radio frequency on the WLAN router

Most modern wireless routers have 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networks that all nearby devices can connect to. If you prefer 2.4G or 5G, just select the appropriate network.

If you insist that your wireless router’s radio frequency only uses 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, here is an example of what to look for when changing your wireless router’s radio frequency.

What you need:

  • You must have access to a wireless router.
  • You need to know the address of the router – the default gateway for your network. You can check this by typing ipconfig on the command line.
  • You need to know the details of the wireless router.
  • The router must have the correct settings to change the radio frequency.

Because routers have different user interfaces, the following instructions and screenshots are just examples of the settings you should look for on the router to change the radio’s preferred frequency.

  1. In the browser, enter your network’s default gateway (router address), for example B. 192.168.0.1.
  2. Connect to your router.
  3. Search for WLAN Signal, WLAN Frequency, WiFi Frequency or Radio Frequency in the WLAN settings, where you will find settings to enable or disable the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz WLAN frequencies.

In the screenshot above, as an example, to change my router so that it only uses the 5GHz wireless frequency, I just switch 5GHz on and 2.4GHz off.

Not all wireless routers allow the user to enable or disable wireless frequency modes. If you can’t find the right settings to change the Wi-Fi frequency on your router, it’s probably because your router doesn’t allow you to change the Wi-Fi frequency or just doesn’t support 5G.

Description to share: This guide shows you how to change the radio frequency of your wireless adapter or router from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz or vice versa in Windows 10.If you are running an older computer that is compatible with the wireless standard of 5GHz, then you can connect to that wireless network by following the steps below. If you are running a newer computer, however, then you can also use the steps below to connect to the wireless network of 2.4GHz. If you are not sure which type of wireless is used on your computer, you can find out by performing a simple test.. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change Windows 10 from 5GHz to 2.4 GHz?

Windows 10 is great, but there are some features, like 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, that it doesn’t support. If you use a 5GHz router, you could be at a significant disadvantage on the 2.4GHz band. This guide shows how you can change the band from the default 2.4GHz to the 5GHz band. Windows 10 includes a feature called Bluetooth which lets you connect a Bluetooth device (like a keyboard, mouse, headset, or speakers) to your computer. Bluetooth is useful for many actions, like sending text messages and emails, transferring files, and playing games. However, Bluetooth can also be an annoyance because it can easily drain your battery. How do you turn off Bluetooth?

How do I change my network band to 2.4 GHz Windows 10?

Wireless networks are a great way to get online. The only downside is that many of them provide a limited range or bandwidth. The 5GHz range is commonly used by wireless routers and wireless access points. 802.11ac, the newest standard, can transmit at wireless speeds of up to 1Gbps. 2.4GHz is commonly used by wireless home routers and wireless access points. When you buy a new computer, or when you move from one computer to another, it is possible to change the wireless network band from 5.0GHz to 2.4GHz or vice versa. Here is a step by step guide to help you change your network band in Windows 10.

Can you change 5GHz to 2.4 GHz?

Windows 10 has a built-in utility for all of you out there who are trying to change the band of your Wi-Fi adapter. You can change it from the Windows Settings, but this utility will do it for you. Just follow these steps to do it: This tutorial will help you change 5GHz to 2.4GHz or vice versa in Windows 10. 1.First off, you need to make sure you’re using a compatible wireless adapter. 2.You need to be able to use the wireless adapter and 5GHz network. 3.You should be able to change 5GHz to 2.4GHz or vice versa. 4.You need to be able to connect your device to the wireless network.
