A Reddit user named seattleabster opened an Amazon wishlist named “Get me a toaster” and received more than $1,000 in donations—enough to get a $100 toaster from Amazon. Despite the generosity, the toaster doesn’t seem to be very good. The video shows that the illuminated S conveys the same amount of heat as a normal toaster, and the buttons on the side seem low quality. To be fair, the toaster is still in beta testing, so it might improve over time.
The video game Destiny 2’s $85,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 toaster is apparently not very good. Call it a case of charity gone wrong. The gaming community is used to charity-related giveaways, but this one is a new low. The “toaster,” which is actually a Destiny 2-themed coffee table, was made using $85,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of people’s donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Destiny 2, the sequel to the popular game that launched last year, will be out in a month, and to celebrate the game’s release, Bungie is giving away a $85 toaster. Yes, a toaster. But, well, it’s a pretty fancy one. The toaster is the second piece of the “Destiny 2: The Dawning” collector’s edition, which comes packaged with a goose down sleeping bag, a hand-drawn Bungie-sanctioned poster, a pin featuring the game’s logo, and a toaster.
Today in weird philanthropic news, we take a look at Destiny 2: The official toaster. While this seems like a problem with the Spaceballs product, there is a story here. In June 2020, Bungie challenged fans to raise $777,777.77 to make a toaster during a charity event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Jude. Fans have raised over $800,000. And here we are.
The Destiny toaster is currently available to order for $85, which includes a free toaster roll and a unique Burnt Edges-themed toast sample delivered immediately via email. 10% of toaster sales will also be donated to the St. Louis Foundation. Jude.
But there’s a catch: I hear the toaster isn’t very good, especially for the price Bungie is asking. The RPS product review states that the device is made of cheap plastic, has only two slots for the slices, and provides a unique opportunity to apply the game’s logo to the sides of the bread.
I’m serious about the toast, and $85 buys you a really good toaster (and enough change to donate to St. Jude’s Hospital), you know? We’re not talking about two plastic slicers, but four slicers, independent heat control, stainless steel with a nice retro finish, settings for baking and defrosting bagels, plenty of room for sourdough preparation, etc. The kind of toaster you see in the Argos catalogue when you turn the page, waiting for you to go back and look at it if you want to treat yourself.
The toaster has also apparently caused controversy in the community, because of course it has. Fans complain not only about the cheap build, but also that it doesn’t look enough like the Jotunn weapon it’s based on, and that Bungie has focused more on developing the toaster than releasing a new PvP map. What are you… Come on, we’re pretty sure that brand management specialists are not also game development specialists.
But $800,000 was raised for charity. Well, hooray?
ViewWhen you start a franchise with one of the biggest games in the world, you want to do it well, and that’s exactly what Bungie has done with Destiny 2. The game is everything you could want in a sequel, and it’s easy to get lost in the game’s rich lore and expansive world. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy to obtain good food, and that’s what one Destiny fan found out when he bought a $85 toaster that was created thanks to charity donations..
