A roundtable of college softball coaches discuss the recent change in rules, how they’ve managed to adjust and what obstacles they face moving forward.

College softball roundtable

We’re almost halfway through the collegiate softball season, and we’ve already seen records broken, walk-off home runs, and dramatic defensive plays on the field.

Oklahoma has once again shown its supremacy, as it did last year. The Sooners are 32-0 and have the best batting average (.383) and ERA in the country after winning their first 33 games of the 2021 season their way to the Women’s College World Series victory (0.67). Jocelyn Alo leads the nation in batting average (.513) in home runs with four (16).

Is there anybody who can dethrone – or even stop – the Sooners? Montana Fouts of Alabama began the season with a sub-1.00 ERA, but in three of her past four starts and four of her last nine, she has allowed five runs.

In the circle, Virginia Tech has had success, with freshman Emma Lemley and senior Keely Rochard ranked third and fourth in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings, respectively.

While UCLA lost two-way threat and Olympian Rachel Garcia, the Bruins, who are ranked fourth in the nation in RPI, average 7.2 runs per game and have a 1.16 ERA pitching staff led by Lauren Shaw and Megan Faraimo.

Our softball experts analyze the first two months of the season and provide predictions for Oklahoma City.
