Canelo Álvarez successfully defended his WBC, IBF, and Ring Magazine Middleweight belts against the tough Caleb Plant. Along with this historic victory, Canelo became undisputed middleweight champion of the world.
The “was floyd mayweather undisputed champion” was a question that was asked on Quora. The answer to the question is, Floyd Mayweather Jr. held the WBC, WBA (Super), and IBF titles in his undefeated career.
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) — Canelo Alvarez stopped Caleb Plant in the 11th round with two stunning knockdowns to become the first undisputed four-belt super middleweight world champion in boxing history.
With a consistent tactical effort culminating in a magnificent show of his famed power to finish the previously undefeated Plant at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, lvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) added Plant’s IBF championship to his own WBC, WBA, and WBO crowns.

The Mexican superstar, widely regarded as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, became the sixth man to win four belts, joining junior welterweight Josh Taylor as the only current undisputed champions in their respective weight classes.
After stopping three of his previous four opponents, lvarez had a tough battle against the tenacious Plant (21-1), who preferred to shuffle backward and work behind his jab to avoid Canelo’s power.
In the opening seconds of the 11th round, lvarez sent Plant flying to the mat with a devastating combination followed by an uppercut while Plant attempted to dodge away.
Plant sprang up unsteadily, and lvarez down him with two massive right punches again, causing referee Russell Mora to stop the fight.
Plant is a tough champion and an amazing athlete who survived multiple personal hardships to get a fight against Canelo, but the Tennessee native saw how wide the gap between Canelo and his peers remained.
lvarez is the first Mexican boxer to have absolute control of a division, and every flag-waving fan in the 16,586-strong pro-Canelo audience appeared to realize it. The champion, a native of Guadalajara, talked regularly before the fight about his desire to accomplish the accomplishment for himself and for Mexico.

With his seventh straight win in little over three years, lvarez extended the most successful active career in boxing. Since losing a majority decision to Floyd Mayweather in 2013, he hasn’t lost in 16 bouts, with just a draw against Gennady Golovkin blemishing his record.
Until September, when lvarez took offense to an insult made by Plant at a press conference in Beverly Hills to advertise the fight, the two had no personal animosity. Plant was left with a cut on his face and a fresh source of drive after a short scuffle with lvarez.

Plant started the greatest fight of his career with a strong game plan, jabbing lvarez and running away from his opponent’s better strength, usually employing a shoulder roll to escape difficulty. In the fourth, lvarez gradually moved down Plant and inflicted damage, backing him up against the ropes and throwing combinations.
lvarez seemed unconcerned with Plant’s strikes at first, and he became even less so as the fight went. In the latter rounds, lvarez became more successful, pushing Plant behind and even daring the cautious Plant to attack him in the seventh.
The promoter rivalries and squabbling sanctioning organizations that keep the top boxers from meeting one other far too frequently are regular and well-deserved criticisms of boxing as an institution. Lvarez, on the other hand, leveraged his celebrity to join an exclusive club by winning all four main belts.
Since the WBO’s inception, only five boxers have ever earned four-belt undisputed champion status: middleweights Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor, junior welterweights Terence Crawford and Taylor, and cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk.
Taylor accomplished the feat after defeating Jose Ramirez in May. In February, he will defend all four belts in Glasgow against Jack Catterall for the first time.
