With 91,553 fans in attendance at Camp Nou on Wednesday for Barcelona’s Champions League quarterfinal versus Real Madrid, the club established a new global record for a women’s match.

The previous record for a women’s game was set in 1999, when 90,185 people saw the United States and China play in the World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

According to some estimates, 110,000 spectators saw Denmark beat Mexico in the 1971 World Cup final in the Azteca Stadium, despite the fact that the competition was not officially sanctioned.

Prior to Wednesday’s Clasico, the previous best in club football was 60,739, reached when Atletico Madrid faced Barcelona in a league game at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2019.

Barca’s home games are generally held in the 6,000-seater Estadi Johan Cruyff at the club’s training field, but this match was relocated to Camp Nou due to increased ticket demand.

It will be the European champions’ second competitive game in the 99,354-seat stadium, and their first with supporters. Last season’s 5-0 triumph against Espanyol was likewise held at Camp Nou, but owing to coronavirus limitations, it was held behind closed doors. Barcelona triumphed 5-2 on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals with an 8-3 aggregate score.

“I had to hold back my emotions at the conclusion of the game because this is just too weird,” Barcelona winger Caroline Graham Hansen said afterward. “It’s one thing to play at Camp Nou, but when it’s packed and we’re winning the Champions League 5-2, the supporters don’t leave; they remain to rejoice with us!”

“I had never imagined anything like that, and I had chills all over my body. It’s not just 91,500 here tonight; it’s 91.500 Barca supporters, and they’ve been chanting the whole game, which has been incredible. It’s something I never expected to happen, but it did, and maybe it won’t be the last time.”

Barca’s treble-winning season last season, which includes their first Champions League title, has piqued fans’ interest in the squad.

They’ve already won the Spanish Supercopa and won the league for the third time in a row with a 5-0 triumph against Real Madrid earlier this month. They have won all 25 of their matches in the Primera Division, scoring 138 goals and allowing just seven.

The squad has also benefited from individual accolades for captain Alexia Putellas. In December, the club captain won the Ballon d’Or, and in January, he was named FIFA’s The Best.

“This might be the start of a new era,” Putellas stated before of the game during a press conference. “A lot of people, particularly ladies, will be inspired by this game.” Because I only saw guys, I didn’t think it was feasible, which is why I believe it can open many doors for many individuals.

“I knew I could play football, but on this magnitude, it didn’t seem feasible. Because Barca is the largest club in the world and has a voice, this match has the potential to be a before and after.”
